Course Objectives: 
The goal of this course is to provide knowledge about ports, their types and properties, introducing the parameters and methods used in port design and give applied experience in the design of a port structure.
Course Content: 

Ports, history and purposes. Types. Structural members of ports. Hinterland concept. General properties of ships, maneouvering. Fundamental rules of design: Navigation channel, turning circle, quays, basin depth, port entrance. Design of commercial ports. Functional requirements. Handling equipment and capacity. Determination of quaywall types and lengths. Container ports: Design of apron, stock area and other land-based elements, handling equipment. Marinas: Pier systems, design of land area. Bulk cargo terminals. Liquid cargo terminals. Roro terminals. Other commercial ports. Military ports. Fisheries. Infrastructure design in ports. Numerical modeling and its applications in port design and functionality evaluation.
