Course Objectives:

This course aims to demonstrate the properties and behaviour of the macroscopic world in terms of structure and arrangement of the constituent molecules and to build a foundation in chemical knowledge for solving the problems in science and engineering.

Course Content:

Atomic theory; Chemical reactions; Stoichiometry; Periodic properties of elements; Chemical Bonding; Intermolecular Attractions, Gases; Solids; Properties of solutions; Chemical Kinetics; Termochemistry and 5 selected experiments.

Course Methodology:

1) Adequate knowledge in chemistry; ability to use theoretical and applied information in chemistry to model and solve engineering problems.

a. Understand the atomic and molecular nature of matter and chemical reactions that describe their transformations;

b. Describe the subatomic structure of atoms and apply this information to the bonding, structure, shape and polarity of molecules.

c. Understand the periodic table as an organizing concept of chemical properties.

d. Describe intermolecular forces, solid, liquid, gas state and phase behavior of matter.

e. Solve chemical problems using concepts of balanced chemical reactions and stoichiometry, gas laws, thermochemistry, and chemical kinetics.
