Course Objectives:
In this course, construction and interpretetion of phase diagrams in terms of thermodynamic variables will be introduced. In addition, the evolution of equilibrium (and non-equilibrium) microstructures will be explained for unary, binary, and multi-component systems.
Course Content:

Interpretation and evaluation of phase composition and phase stability as a function of thermodynamic variables such as temperature, pressure and constituent composition of common materials systems. Phase equilibria for one component; two component and ternary systems. The concept of solid solution and Gibbs free energy versus phase compositiın relationship in common engineering alloys.

Course Methodology:
1: Lecture by instructor, 2: Lecture by instructor with class discussion, 3: Problem solving by instructor, 4: Use of simulations, 5: Problem solving assignment, 6: Reading assignment, 7: Laboratory work, 8: Term research paper, 9: Presentation by guest
Course Evaluation Methods:
