Dr. Uzel graduated from Civil Engineering Department of İstanbul Technical University in 1993. She later joined the Structural Analysis Group at the same university as a Research Assistant in January 1994. She completed her master's study at the Science and Technology Institute of İstanbul Technical University and graduated with Honours degree in 1995. She also worked as a Visiting Researcher at Building Research Institute in Tsukuba. Her research with Dr. Toshibumi Fukuta was supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In 1999, Almıla Uzel started her Ph.D studies under the supervision of University Professor Michael P. Collins at the Civil Engineering Department of University of Toronto. Based on the experimental and analytical research that were carried out during her doctoral studies, changes to design specifications were proposed and have been adopted in the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 2002 revision. Also, changes to the shear design provisions of CSA A23.3-04, Canadian design code for concrete structures, are now included in the CSA A23.3-04. After graduating in 2003, Dr. Uzel taught three courses at the Civil Engineering Department and Engineering Science Department - Infrastructure program of University of Toronto as an Adjunct Professor. She then worked as a Structural Engineer and later as a Project Manager in Toronto, Canada between 2006 and 2012. She is a licenced P.Eng. in Ontario, Canada. Since September 2012, Dr. Uzel works as an Assistant Professor at the Yeditepe University. Her research areas include analysis and design of disturbed regions, shear design of RC members, design of post-tensioned transfer girders and influence of loading conditions on the shear strength of RC members.
