About the Department

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering that applies fundamental engineering principles and methods to solve health-related problems using advanced quantitative and analytical techniques. The main objective of this study is to use engineering methods to sustain longer, better quality and healthier lives of people.

Yeditepe University Department of Biomedical Engineering was established in 2004. The first student graduated in 2008. Currently, there are five full-time faculty members and more than two hundred and fifty undergraduate students.

The main areas of faculty research are the production of new biomaterials for dental and medical applications, photobiology, photochemistry, the development of new medical imaging techniques and the design of new medical instruments and devices such as electronic implants.

The department has many high quality laboratory facilities including Biomedical Electronics, Biomedical Instrumentation, Biomaterials (X-ray Diffraction), Medical Imaging, Microprocessor and Microcontroller and Optical Spectroscopy laboratories.

The undergraduate curriculum consists of courses in basic sciences, engineering sciences, biology, physiology, engineering design and management, social and economic sciences, and Turkish language and history. All courses are taught in English.

The freshman year consists of classes in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, scientific computing, engineering design and classes to build a foundation for entry into biomedical engineering. The second year includes courses in biological and medical physics, biomechanics, physiology, electrical circuits, electromagnetic fields and waves, and biomaterials. The junior year curriculum offers courses on biomedical electronics and instrumentation, sensors and transducers, and signals and systems. The senior year curriculum consists of microprocessors and microcontrollers, medical imaging and six technical electives.

The technical electives are designed to train students in several specialized areas of biomedical engineering, including orthopedic cements for hard tissue repair, biomedical and dental graft materials, biometrics for analytical reasoning and modeling, pain management techniques, expert systems in biomedical engineering, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI), and medical image processing and computing.

Most of the courses include a laboratory component where students receive hands-on training in the tools, technologies, principles or techniques taught in the course.

Final year students are expected to complete an engineering project in which they work closely with faculty and conduct research that can produce conference proceedings, publications and patents.

Through internships, students have the opportunity to work in prestigious private companies, hospitals, medical centers or research centers.

Students are encouraged to participate in international student exchange programs such as the ERASMUS program.

Two major and minor programs are also offered by the Department in conjunction with other engineering departments at Yeditepe University.

Graduates are prepared to enter the workforce in industry with medical product companies or health centers and hospitals, or to pursue further education in graduate school.

* Master's Biomedical Engineering program (with thesis) has started accepting students. For more information, please visit the related page.

Biomedical Engineering is an interdisciplinary department that successfully applies the principles of engineering in the fields of biology and medicine to produce solutions to medical problems and problems from an engineer's point of view and acts as a bridge between medical sciences and engineering. At this point, there is a need for competent engineers who can successfully provide this communication and provide cooperation in medical and engineering organizations. The Department of Biomedical Engineering aims to train competent and professional biomedical engineers who can easily produce, design, maintain and repair medical devices, materials, systems and instruments used for treatment and diagnosis in the health environment, and solve problems in the field of engineering correctly and effectively.

The numerical score of the university exam is used to prefer Biomedical Engineering, which is affiliated to the Faculty of Engineering. It is possible to work in many fields with a good education in the field of biomedical engineering. Graduates can easily find the opportunity to work in the medical and pharmaceutical industry, various hospitals, organizations related to environmental protection, treatment and genetic diagnosis organizations, the Institute of Sanitation and the Turkish Standards Institute. Today, the future of Biomedical Engineering is bright with the rapidly developing technology. It is also predicted that job opportunities will increase day by day with the developments in medicine and engineering.

The field of Biomedical Engineering covers many areas. Although their specialty is engineering and biology, they can design various computer software to design X-ray machines and similar devices, use their knowledge of biology and chemistry to develop new and different drug therapies, and use statistics and mathematics to translate the signals generated by the heart or brain into concrete data. In order to become a Biomedical Engineer, it is required to graduate from the "Biomedical Engineering" departments of universities with a bachelor's degree

Biomedical Engineering can be defined as an interdisciplinary branch of engineering that uses advanced analytical and quantitative techniques to solve problems in the medical field and uses the methods and principles underlying engineering to reach a conclusion. Yeditepe Biomedical Engineering was established in 2004 as one of the first universities in Turkey in the biomedical field. The first students from the department graduated in 2008. The Biomedical Engineering Program, which is carried out with five full-time faculty members who are dynamic, competent in their fields, experts in their fields, have taken part in many projects and have experience abroad, and all academic staff, basically covers the teaching of engineering fundamentals and principles used in solving problems in the fields of medicine and biology. Students have access to hospital facilities that are rare in Turkey within Yeditepe. With the biomaterials, optical spectroscopy, biomedical instrumentation, biomedical electronics and medical imaging laboratories in the Biomedical Engineering Department of Yeditepe University Faculty of Engineering, students can easily engage in various research activities. The undergraduate curriculum; It consists of engineering design and management, engineering sciences, physiology, biology, economic and social sciences, basic sciences, Turkish language and Turkish history courses. All courses are given in English.

In addition to various certificates, Yeditepe University also provides internship opportunities for students who want to gain experience. Putting the theoretical knowledge learned in the course into practice is very important in the field of specialization. With the internship experience gained in various sectors, graduates have job opportunities in hospitals, health centers, medical product companies and many other similar organizations in a short time.

Individuals who graduate from the Biomedical Engineering field are called "Biomedical Engineers". Biomedical engineers have job opportunities in many fields based on medicine and engineering. Within the framework of the education they receive, biomedical engineers carry out works such as dialysis machine design and manufacturing, artificial organs, pacemakers, installation of computer and electronic systems in healthcare environments, angiography, x-ray devices, dialysis machine manufacturing, blood analysis sensors and design and manufacturing of medical imaging devices similar to these systems.

The duties of biomedical engineers vary according to their seniority and the fields they work in. Graduates can perform the design and economic feasibility of the product, solve problems in cooperation with purchasing, quality, marketing and production departments, test and maintain medical devices and provide training in these fields.

There are job opportunities in both the private sector and public institutions. Graduates of the department can continue their postgraduate education in the fields of medical physics, tissue engineering, bioinformatics and biomedical materials and specialize in their fields if they wish.

Yeditepe University Biomedical Engineering graduates can work in public and private hospitals, medical manufacturing and design industry, and in the technical service, sales, project design, quality and R&D departments of companies operating in the production areas of clinical devices. The search for experts in this field is increasing day by day with the advancing technology.

Our Mission

As Yeditepe University Biomedical Engineering Department, our mission is to raise young people as individuals who can think independently and multidimensionally, are far from imitation, have the ethics and social responsibility required by the profession, are self-confident, have adopted lifelong learning and working together, and are extremely loyal to Atatürk's principles and Atatürk's reforms, to contribute to the development of advanced technology, and to provide service to our nation and the entire universe by ensuring that manufactured phenomena are reflected in social life in a beneficial way.
