Title: From CSE Days at Yeditepe University to Pervasive Smart Sensing Systems at the University of Twente
Abstract: A Long time ago, I was sitting exactly where you are now, navigating the coursework at Yeditepe University and wondering what the future held. Today, I lead the Pervasive Systems research group, where we are exploring how computing is becoming an inseparable part of our physical world.
In this talk, I will share my academic journey from a bachelor’s student at this department to leading a research team at the forefront of the Internet of Things. I will introduce illustrative examples of research initiatives focused on pervasive smart sensing systems. Pervasive systems are characterized by networks of collaborative sensing, computational, and reasoning components that are seamlessly integrated into their environments, facilitating active and unobtrusive interactions. These systems represent a “digital skin” that perceives its surroundings through the amalgamation of numerous interconnected smart sensing devices embedded within the environment. The application domains include Smart Urban, Smart Life, and Smart Industry. In particular, I will address the challenges, including scalability and resource efficiency, and the end-to-end edge sensing systems our team is developing to mitigate them.
Bio:
Dr. Özlem Durmaz Incel is currently the chair of the Pervasive Systems Research Group and a faculty member in the Computer Science department at the University of Twente (UT). She obtained her Ph.D. in Computer Science from UT. Prior to her return to UT, she was a faculty member at Galatasaray University and then at Bogazici University (Istanbul). Her research centres on utilising sensing technologies from the Internet of Things, mobile and wearable devices, and machine learning techniques to develop context-aware, intelligent, and resource-efficient systems. Her research interests encompass edge AI, human activity and well-being recognition, behavioural biometrics, and the Internet of Things. She serves on the Editorial Board of IEEE Internet Computing and is an associate editor for the Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies.
