He worked on various research projects funded by US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and European Union (EU) as a researcher or principal investigator. His research areas involve engineering behavior of transitional soils mainly silty/clayey sands, liquefaction, soil specimen preparation methods and various aspects of experimental soil mechanics. He is also interested in sustainable usage of dredged soils and lunar soil mechanics. Dr. Monkul is also active in academic teaching. He taught one graduate and seven different undergraduate courses at Yeditepe University, and a graduate course at Oregon State University. Dr. Monkul continues to teach as a Professor at Yeditepe University in Istanbul.
