A Novel Radio Resource Management (RRM) Technique for Interference Management in LTE-A HetNet

SAJJAD AHMAD KHAN

Abstract

The heterogeneous network (HetNets) emerges as one of the most auspicious developments toward realizing the target specifications of Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) and future generations wireless networks. In HetNet, small-cells such as Microcell, Picocell, and Femtocell, etc. are deployed over the Macrocell region and the network traffic is shared by these cells according to some optimization criteria and policy, etc. However, Co-Channel Interference (CCI) and Spectral efficiency are critical challenges that severely affect the system performance in LTE-A HetNet. Therefore, proper Radio Resource Management (RRM) is crucial to mitigate the CCI and obtain higher spectral efficiency. In our research work, we implemented a new Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR) method in such a way to minimize the CCI and achieve better overall throughput of the system in LTE-A HetNet. In FFR, the entire cell region is split into several zones, and similarly, the total available bandwidth is divided into few fractions (subbands). Subsequently, the subbands are assigned to Macro-Users in different zones and reassigned to Femto-Users in other zones of the cell region.
