New Techniques of Array Antenna Design for Satellite Communications; Techniques of Passive and Active Frequency Selective Surface Design

JAVAD JANGI GOLEZANI

Abstract

Array antennas with high number of elements are developed to obtain high directivity with low side lobe level to be used in satellite communications. But, increasing number of the elements in the design of arrays causes to long microstrip lines in feed network leading to dielectric and ohmic losses. Also, the use of large number of power splitters leads to increasing insertion and isolation losses. Consequently, novel methods for array antenna design with higher directivity and low side lobe level along with effective feed network are presented. The novel proposed methods are based on effective uses of both array factor and element factor with respect to each other.

The interference made by GSM signals is a limiting factor in the performance of other electronic equipment.  It has been difficult to design FSS with closely spaced bands and low sensitivity against oblique incidence angles on single layer. Novel triple band FSS’s as band stop filters in GSM frequency bands are presented. Also, an active structure is presented to control the reflection and transmission characteristics of FSS and its configurability. A novel and effective method is presented to overcome the Faraday Cage effect in active FSS’s enabling the design with a very ideal on-off ability.
