Dr Akgul graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering of Istanbul Technical University in 2005. He has finished his M.Sc. thesis in 2008 in the Coastal Sciences and Engineering Department of the Institute of Science and Technology, ITU, where he studied on floating breakwaters. His Ph.D. followed in the same department, based on the design of a multipurpose floating breakwater and wave energy converter hybrid system. He did also work as a research/teaching assistant in the Hydraulics department of the Civil Engineering Faculty, ITU between 2007 and 2014, participating in some national and international research projects and assisting the courses of the department. Part of his Ph.D. study he did carry out in Strathclyde University, Glasgow, UK, and following his Ph.D. viva, he participated in a research project in the same university for a year, working on the access safety to offshore wind farms. 2015, he has been appointed as an Assistant Professor in Yeditepe University, Civil Engineering Department. Dr. Akgul teaches courses mainly based on dynamics, fluid mechanics and hydraulic structures. His field of study covers a wide range from wave-structure interaction to floating body hydrodynamics and renewable energy sources.
